How does it work?

Somatic Experiencing (SE) is body-based trauma therapy based on the work of Peter Levine who wrote the ground-breaking book, Waking the Tiger. Peter studied animals in the wild, and watched how they resolved excess energy by shaking after an overwhelming or life-threatening event. Just as animals shake to release excess energy, our work will provide a safe place for you to move and release excess or stuck energy from your system through body awareness, sound, and movement.

SE was developed to treat trauma, which can include everything from childhood neglect, to sexual assault, car accidents, and living under oppression. This work has also been found helpful for people who deal with depression, flashbacks, panic attacks, and difficulty concentrating after an overwhelming event. All these experiences impact the body, and therefore the body needs to be a part of the healing process.

We start by the process by establishing a connection to the parts of yourself that help you feel settled, grounded, and connected to the world. Gradually, small pieces of the challenging material, are brought in and processed through the body in a way that feels safe and manageable.
